Welcome to Sol Food Mobile Farm, a growing experience on wheels! The mission of Sol Food Mobile Farm starts with advocating for local foods and renewable energy sources. To address such large topics we offer both expos and workshops from our retro-fitted school bus classroom. Our program directives can be divided into five major categories- gardening, composting, alternative energies, nutrition and environmental interaction.
Sol Food Mobile Farm is a group of four friends from Durham, North Carolina, who share a passion for environmental sustainability and education. Starting in June 2012 they will be traveling around the country in a school bus converted to run on waste vegetable oil, teaching about square foot gardening, nutrition, composting, alternative fuels, and outdoor living. Over the course of six months, the team will provide free Workshops to build ten community gardens and compost stations around the country. They will also provide over thirty Expositions of their sustainable bus home- complete with a living green-roof, mobile greenhouse and solar panels!
Our philosophy is that a well-rounded education includes hands-on experience, and that time spent digging, planting and harvesting vegetables alongside peers will help connect children with their community and the origins of their food.
The reason we chose to travel around the country is because we aim to serve communities in their own backyards! By recognizing that every community has a unique set of resources and skills, we hope to provide a meaningful gardening experience for the sites we visit. We hope to inspire individuals, within these communities, to foster a deep ethic of environmental stewardship in their local area!
